Breast Cancer Awareness and Action

According to the American Cancer Society, prevalence of breast cancer in American women is second only to skin cancer. One in eight American women is expected to develop breast cancer over the course of their lifetime. 

Spira Care wants to remind our patients of the importance of preventive screening. Spira Care, LLC strongly endorses the breast cancer screening guidelines provided by the USPSTF (United States Preventive Services Task Force), the CDC, and The American Cancer Society suggesting that patients and primary care providers should engage in shared decision-making around when one might consider mammography. For many women, those conversations and screening examinations are most appropriate beginning at age 40. For other women with unique medical circumstances, including family history of breast cancer, alternative screening recommendations might be most appropriate.

Talk with your Spira Care provider about your health history to determine if a mammogram is necessary. If so, you can work with a Care Guide for assistance scheduling a mammogram outside of a Spira Care Center. Just call 913-29-SPIRA (77472).

Don’t forget breast cancer impacts many people and families in our community. If someone in your life is affected by breast cancer, check in on them this month and join in activities that will increase awareness of what we all can do to prevent and support people impacted by this disease.
